❤︎   Never Miss A Post ...

She is Caia Koopman

Within her artwork, Caia Koopman superbly creates an enchanting juxtaposition of life and death flitting somewhere in-between fantasy and 21st century lifestyles. Caia’s dainty sugary-sweet feminine characters are tattooed, edgy and streetwise; her cute and whimsical scenes are fundamentally moody and macabre. I find myself lost within the dreamscapes where nothing quite fits and yet everything is perfectly in place.

First and Foremost

Tell us a little about your background. When were you born? Where did you grow up? Did art play a significant role in your childhood?

I was born in California and I grew up in the fantastic 80s in the Bay. Art played a huge role in my childhood, I was pathologically shy so I drew a lot of picture to avoid speaking.

Did you delve straight into the world of art after high school or did you come to it later in your life? In either case, what exactly inspired you to pursue art as a career?

After high school I went to UCSC and studied all sorts of things, thinking I would be a math teacher once I was finished being a professional snowboarder. When my pro-snowboard career wasn’t working out as well as I’d hoped I started doing board graphics, that’s what lead to my art career.

The Nitty-Gritty

Which tools and mediums do you use and or prefer? Do you have a set process for creating your work?

I like acrylic on wood panels, and I paint in a million layers. I’m learning spray paint and am interested in getting better at murals.

What is your art in relation to your heart? Tell us your why. What does it all mean to you?

It’s hard to find words for it, I just really enjoy the challenge. It’s what I’m good at and on most days what I would most like to spend my day doing for a living. I love making my art but it’s still work, if I didn’t need to work I might spend more time snowboarding!

What are your thoughts on where your art began, to what it has now become?

I think I began as more of an illustrator and am evolving to more of a fine artist. With a possible fork in the road to street artist, I’ve only done one real mural so it doesn’t really count yet.

Five For Fun

If you could only wear one colour ever again, what what you be? Why?

That’s easy, black, pretty much already there.

What is something which you possess that you would never sell or give away, ever? Why?

My dog.

In a garden of all of the flowers, which one would you choose? Why?

I like all flowers, I could never choose, but I guess chrysanthemums are pretty extra awesome.

If you were a paint brush, how would you describe yourself?

I guess I’d be one of the short little brushes.

What is one talent you have outside of being an artist?

I’m pretty good at sports and I love hiking up mountains.

Before You Go...

Anything you would like to add? What is up next for you that we should look out for?

I’ve got a small handful of new originals going up on my website soon, I’m working on a new coloring book and possibly a few more murals with PangeaSeed in my future.

Where can we find you?

What is one pro-tip lesson you have learned from your past as an artist?

Don’t take anything for granted.

What is your one boss-tip for all women to be true to themselves and live their best lives?

Women supporting women is a beautiful thing, seek it out in your life whenever possible. Also, let’s save the damn planet, and democracy while we’re at it.

She is Art.

Be Bold. Be Sexy. Be Fierce.
