She is Lori Earley

Lori Earley. One hell of an artist. One hell of a woman. If you don’t already know her name, from now on you will never forget it.

Lori Earley is a Surrealist Artist who creates spellbinding portraiture with oils and graphite. I am completely enraptured by the sombre undertones of Lori’s artwork, swallowed whole by all of the dark and spellbound by the magnificence of it all. The gaunt, ravishing elongated faces and forms are utterly mesmerising, and those eyes! Those large, brilliant eyes, like shining, swirling portals enroute to the honest truth of love and strength in the depths of sadness, torture and pain.

Born in Westchester County, New York in the small conservative town of Rye, Lori grew up completely isolated from the arts of any kind. And yet, drawing and painting has always been her passion. Since she learned how to hold a pencil in her hand Lori would draw, now believing the absence of artistic influences and nurturing is exactly what encouraged her vivid imagination to flourish.

Lori studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating at the top of her class with a BFA. Her first steady job out of college was as an illustrator. She hated every minute of it and so sought through rejections and determination, in and out of the many galleries of Manhattan until she found her “lucky break” in 2005 with a feature in Juxtapoz magazine… and literally her career as an artist exploded from there!

Unfortunately in the midst of her success, Lori almost lost her life before being diagnosed with a rare genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. “EDS causes faulty and weak collagen, which is essentially the "glue" that holds the entire body together.” She was born with the disease and suffered severe symptoms and pain for 20 odd years before finally being diagnosed. Due to the late prognosis, Lori was forced to stop doing what she loved in light of the pain and spent several years undergoing many corrective surgeries.

Lori was finally able able to begin her slow return to her art and created her first new painting since her departure from the art world, titled “Strange New Life in Windy Hill” in 2018. This was thanks toa specialised, personal physical therapy program at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida in 2017. You can read about her journey through the program here.

Her fight isn’t over, but thanks to the Mayo Clinic, Lori is able to continue doing what she loves and carry on taking the art world by storm, all the while raising awareness for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and giving strength and inspiration to those in similar situations around the world.

Lori Early. One hell of an artist. One hell of a woman.
