“She exudes an unadulterated, primal feline power, from deep within. Through her regal composure, unparalleled beauty and grace is a depth of wisdom, a raw sense of self, both instinctive and resolved, which opens her heart and sets her soul free.” - Avana by Tanya Marie Reeves

Name

Avana is a derivative of Avyanna, an American name meaning “Strong, Powerful, Beautiful Woman”. The name can also be tied to the word Nirvana, an important concept in Hinduism meaning "bliss" or "liberation".

Totem

Gold. Both the colour and the precious metal, have a reputation for representing extravagance, wealth, riches, excess, prestige and luxury… be that as it may, gold is also a symbol of wisdom, positivity, success, prosperity, illumination and reward.

Tiger Stripes, while commonly deemed symbols of camouflage and protection, the unique markings are also emblems of beauty and individuality.

The tiger symbolises personal strength, grace and vitality. Bringing to the forefront primal and guttural instincts, the ability to trust yourself, trust your intuition and act accordingly. The female tiger specifically, represents beauty, ferocity and protection. An incredibly strong totem for reclaiming feminine power.

Inspiration and Work in Progress

In June 2021 I had drawn this very base outline with an alternate design. I had ordered two fabric selections as I wasn’t sure which I liked best. Turns out the tiger fabric I have used here didn’t work with the initial design, so I drew up another layout to suit. But I still wasn’t sold despite how much I love love loved the fabric. I ditched my plan and created Chessa instead.

That bloody gorgeous fabric continued to nag at me however… and so I just decided to go for it. Every step of the way creating Avana was illuminating for me in a way I am finding really hard to describe… Despite my initial hesitations, she came together so seamlessly and there was just this essence of “knowing” that I was feeling which was so incredibly strong.

I have been really excited seeing Avana come to light before my very eyes (at my own fingertips!) and also to work on something a little different from my last few projects.

I hope you love her as much as I do.
